When buying, should I avoid a timeshare with a high fee like $800 so I won't have to pay so much each year? Or do the higher fees go along with the higher priced timeshares?
Typically timeshare maintenance fees & taxes are billed together, but there are exceptions, I'm sure.

I would think that the maintenance fees reflect, to some degree, the luxury, up-keep and perhaps the beautification of your home resort, so seeking a very low MF w/out considering the ramifications of this choice may come to be a regret if the timeshare property is not maintained to certain standards. Taxes will be determined by the area in which the deeded timeshare exists.

Bottom line, IMO, is this: BUY RESALE TIMESHARE and save thousands of dollars, compare these HUGE savings to the timeshare resort developer price and even steep maintenance fees seem somewhat justified.
